Improve Your Academic English and Ensure Your Success

What is Academic English, also known as English for Academic Purposes (EAP)?

Academic English is not just advanced English, or good English. Rather, it is the more formal style of English used at universities, in textbooks, academic articles, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations. It has special vocabulary and phraseology (ways of saying things) that are very different from the everyday English most people speak and read. This special kind of English is not taught in most ESL courses, but is essential when discussing physical and biological sciences, social sciences and the humanities.

Who needs to know Academic English?

University professors, instructors, and tutors, especially those who learned English as an adult
Graduate students who must begin to write papers, reports, theses, and other academic texts for the first time in their career, and give presentations at conferences – whether English is their mother tongue or not
Undergraduate students who must learn how to quickly read academic textbooks and write papers, reports and perhaps an undergraduate thesis, plus give presentations – especially non-native speakers of English
